Designing energy-efficient HVAC systems for EVs while balancing passenger comfort and vehicle performance

For years, carmakers have been designing heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems for the passenger cabin by sizing a unit to provide a target temperature for the cabin in a certain period of time. This was easily accomplished when carmakers had a large engine with excess heat to work with. With today’s electric vehicles, there are no longer large amounts of wasted heat. Now there is a trade-off on how energy is used.
